Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali’s five-day celebrations. It is an auspicious day for the worship of goddess Lakshmi, being derived from the word ‘dhan’ meaning wealth. It is also a day when puja is done not only for goddess Lakshmi, but for Kuber, the god of wealth, as well.

As the first day of Diwali, Dhanteras is a day that marks the beginning of the preparations for Diwali. It is also believed to be an auspicious day to go buy utensils, gold and silver, amongst the various other necessities for the celebrations. This is considered to be a way to bring in more of this kind of wealth on being blessed by goddess Lakshmi.

It is said that in the old days, Dhanteras was the day you had to buy all the materials for Diwali’s celebrations. This was done so that all classes of people could earn money, enough to celebrate Diwali in their own homes as well. People would go to traders and craftsmen, looking out for cloth, diyas, oil, sugar and flour, amongst other things. This way even small traders had money to light their own lamps with their families.

Even today the ritual has continued as people go out and buy diyas and sweets for the celebrations over the next two days. Some people consider this to be an auspicious day for investments and buy cars and real estate on this day. The most common practice though is to buy jewellery, silver and gold.
