Happy Onam

For most, Onam marks the summer harvest, and Malayalis in India and across the world celebrate the fruits of labour over song, dance and cultural performances. For others, the festival is a welcoming of the spirit of King Mahabali, believed to visit Kerala during Onam.

Keralites everywhere beam with excitement, eager to celebrate this 10 day festival that brings out simply the best of their culture and tradition. Onam, celebrated with grand allure across the state, is embodied by elaborate feasts, folk music, dance performances, energetic games, martial arts, boat races and flowers that characterise the celebrations. Truly an extravaganza of colour and culture!

At the time of Onam, Kerala is transformed into an extravagant stage. The state is abuzz with cultural performances, community games, rituals and feasts…

… from Vallam Kali (boat races), Pookkalam (flower arrangements), Pulikali (tiger dances), Onam Kali (Tug-of-War) and Onathappan (worship) to Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummati Kali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance) and so much more!

The festive spirit starts to build up much before the actual dates of Onam. Family members of all ages are excited by the prospect of buying Onakkodi (Kerala’s traditional wear, the typical white and gold-bordered Kasavu sarees for women, and a mundu for men) and planning Onasadya (a wholesome 9 course meal consisting of 13 essential dishes served on banana leaves).

Onam sure inspires creativity as artisans like potters and weavers work hard to create new designs.

For us too, festivals are undoubtedly a thrilling time as we seize the opportunity to create uniquely themed jewellery sets, alongside our regular collections.
